Municipal Market-Agora
We visited the market's bakery when we were passing through it, tryed the greek cheese pie or ( tyropita), otherwise the market is a great place to try fresh fish as well and buy spices and olive oil. There are many other traditional cretian handmade products, it is a must-see place.

Akti Miaouli - Koum Kapi
The beach at the north part of Koum Kapi (means Sand Gate in Turkish) neighborhood (which is the area east of the Old Town below Miaouli coast) must be full of people during the warm summer months. But that morning in April the 1km long sandy beach was completely empty. Later I’ve heard that for some years swimming was prohibited here due to the...

Elafonisi
A bit over an hour's drive from Chania, but quite scenic, passing through some quaint villages, a gorge and through a tunnel. There is a large parking lot at the end, right at the beach. You won't have far to walk before you are in the water. There is a long stretch of beach... kind of an island where you can keep walking and get away from people....

Balos Beach
You drive a rough road, go up high, park and climb down--60 floors of mostly stone steps. It is a heck of a climb out, not recommended for oldsters, but once the trail has rounded a rock outcrop you see what paradise really is. Amazing. The water colors, the white sand, the beach which only has a few people. This is a NOT TO MISS beach. One of the...

Venetian Harbor
One of the most picturesque corners in Crete and obviously in Chania town itself is the Venetian Harbor. A beautiful colorful area that is full of tourists of course but that’s no surprise. Which leads us to the second problem, most restaurants there (if not all) are tourists traps. Of course you can find great and affordable prices all over the...

Old Town
The best area of Chania is the Old Town which is actually the area behind the Venetian Harbor (a highlight on its own). Put your map inside your bag and get lost in the maze of small alleys and narrow street there, walk through the Jewish neighborhood and see buildings that were build centuries ago, some of them renovated and changed purpose/use...

Akrogiali
I have visited Crete several times, and of all the restaurants I went to, I never tasted anything like Akrogiali´s Schrimp salad. The view speaks for itself, lying next to the beach, with complete wall windows, the restaurant is bright and you feel like sitting next to the water, even inside. The service is great.

how to go there
Chania is located in western part of Crete, at the north side of Chania prefecture.By ferryThis is the most common way to reach Chania. We took a ferry from Piraeus (Anek lines) and after 9 hours (in summer there are some faster options with Hellenic Seaways) Olympic Champion reached Souda port in Chania (one way ticket in 2014 was 35euro +83euro...

Dimotiki Agora
I love markets in every city I visit so the Central Municipal Market (Dimotiki Agora) was high on my list from the beginning. It was built in 1913 by the local civil engineer K.Drandakis on the site of the former main Piata Forma bastion and became the central fish and meat market of the town. It was a modern structure for that time and actually...

Get your bag ready for Crete!!!
Take a bag with the wheels. Some streets are for pedestrains only. Take a sandals and a nice summer dress (black is a Greek white, so if you like black it will be perfect on Crete) for the night out in the town.During the day, unless you really hike in the wilderness I prefer a short skirt and a small top. You will sweat a lot, so shorts can...
