Jewish Memorial
Hildesheim's Jewish Synagogue, built in 1848, was burnt down during Krystallnacht in 1938. In the place where it once stood there is a memorial to the Jewish people condeming the sacrilegious behaviour of those years. The synangogue's original foundations were discovered during the erection of the memorial on the 50th anniversary of Crystal Night...

Tour the churches
A tour of the three biggest churches was our main reason for visiting, but during our visit we couldn't climb the tower of the first, the nave of the second was off limits for a service and the third was shut completely for repairs.St Andreas probably has the finest profile with its enormous copper spire, but it's the newest of the lot, rebuilt as...

City Theatre
The construction work for the neo-classical City Theatre commenced in 1908 according to the plans of Max Littmann. Friedrich Schiller’s words are prominently displayed over the tympanum of the portal: "Der Menschheit Würde ist in Eure Hand gegeben. Bewahret sie. Sie sinkt mit Euch, mit Euch wird sie sich heben.” A rough translation: Man’s dignity...

One worth looking for and one not
We had two meals in Hildesheim, an average Italian pasta at Capri and a very good breakfast at Cafe Ubersee. There seemed to be quite a few Italian restaurants and gelaterias in town, maybe we picked the wrong one though because our meal at the Capri wasn't that great. As we say, 'it filled a hole.' All I remember is the naff decor. Breakfast at...

All you can eat
The Hacienda is not just a steakhouse. Steaks are a favourite meal ther but you get more. It's a steakhouse Argentinian style and a little bit Mexican. Coffee and Cake
This was an historic house with a lovingly reconstructed inetrior. The staff were efficient and friendly. We did not have a meal here but had some very nice coffee and cake for 3 Euro which was a bit of a bargain and gave us the chance to check out the reconstruction which I'm guessing would have been very costly.

Irish life in Hildesheim Germany?
Irish Pub. What can one say about an Irish Pub?I would think the Wild Geese would not be considered a typical Irish Pub, but it does have its character and, of course, lots of characters in the weekends. Say 'HI' to Dandy, the Pub Manager(es) when you visit and don't forget to ask for a pint of Guiness! There is also good food. My two favorites are...

Found more live music in Hildesheim!!!
I've only been to this place twice. Kind of interesting atmosphere. A rather small place that seems to cater mostly to the college crowd. The decore is do-it-yourself 60s art deco like, but I think the owners kids must have done it. Well, it look as though. Seems like a nice place, anyway, with what appears to be friendly staff and patrons.The...

There are frequent train services connecting Hanover and Hildesheim which is only about 30 minutes or alternatively you can drive and take the A7. ICE trains also connect Hildesheim to Gottingen and Braunschweig.I found the best way to see the sights of Hildesheim was by walking but I believe you can catch the bus into town from the Hauptbahnhof...

Hildesheim Shopping

The pedestrianised zone of Hildesheim has heaps of nice shops and cafes that can keep you entertained if you need a break from sightseeing. There were a number of larger chainsbut I saw many a bargain as I cruised the streets.
I particularly remember a store on the right hand side just as you cross the road leaving the hauptbahnhof that was a good quality variety store at very reasonable prices. Sorry I forget the name but it was quite big so you probably wont miss it.more

Packing List
Bring a good book. It might be a bit boring to stay in Hildesheim for a while if you don't know anyone... I could give you my grandma's phone number but I don't think she'll be a good guide, she's 90+ and doesn't hear too well ;-)
