KFC - Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kuala Lumpur

hey, since malaysia is a muslim majority state, pork is not allowed except for other religious groups hence chicken restaurants are very popular here and the international chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken is no exception. Like in other areas, they add local flavor to their popular meals like the lemak chicken so the Kentucky Fried Chicken is especially popular here in Malaysia. They are many locations of KFC in and around the Kuala Lumpur area and some strores at open 24 hours.

Favorite Dish: well the kentucky fried chicken off course and a combo meal here will cost RM 12. a single meals with colonel burger and fries or wedges will cost about RM 7, the choices are endless and for the hungry people like me on a long trip to singapore, this is well worth it.

While changing planes at KL's low cost carrier terminal i was short of ringit and found that most of the restaurants at the terminal were too expensive for me, but if you walk out of the departure terminal and turn left you will find a food hall perhaps 200 metres away. Here there is a good selection of Malaysian dishes to choose from and you can easily find a meal for 6 ringit, much better than the fast food joints (there is a KFC here also). Once you have checked through immigration you will find a store offering all kinds of candies, Biscuits, dried fruits, dried squid, nuts and other delicacies for sale. Plates of each are displayed for sampling and one can easily spend 30 minutes here nibbling away should you feel hungry.

Bill Bryson in one of his books on Australia bemoans the fact that Alice Springs has a McDonalds and has, like most of the world, embraced worldwide American culture, and to some extent I agree with him. However, there is another way to look at it. In Kuala Lumpur we were on our way back to our hotel and found the need to find somewhere cool for a drink. We went into the Maju Junction Mall and saw a KFC. On the menu was a special meal: 2 pieces of chicken, a cold drink, and instead of the usual chips, a fish sauce flavoured rice! Sometimes even an American fast food restaurant can be interesting (see my page on McDonalds, Venice). Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Or in the case of fast food,: The more they are the same, the more they are different.

PS. Mrs Flying.Scotsman thinks that the best KFC chicken is found in China.
