Avoid this Hotel
My planned 6 night stay became a one night fiasco. After a half hour of 1:30 am domestic violence in the room next door, there was a knock on my door.
When I opened (with the lock on) a naked, crying woman needed a towel. I called the front desk -twice and they did nothing. I wasn't any safer than the woman in the hall. Also, the vent poured in smoky air into my non-smoking room, then by 5:30am the traffic noise was horrendous. After calling the local domestic violence hotline who told me the police could and should have been called in to do a "welfare check", I found a great B&B and I was checked out of the Golden Lion by 8 am.
If you like the book Animal,Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, you'll appreciate the local ingredients cooking and hospitality at the Big Bear B&B! Don't be put off by the Commercial Drive getting there. It's quiet, comfortable and interesting! Carol Ross is a charming and interesting native Alaskan hostess who has put heart and soul into her B&B.
Unique Quality: I cannot say enough about the noise and lack of care by the staff.
If for some reason you get stuck here, the Moose's Tooth is within walking distance, even in pouring sleet, and has artisan pizzas and good microbrews.
Directions: Corner of busy 36th Ave and busy Old Seward Highway.

Avoid the Golden Lion!
Business associates stayed here because of the good price and recommended never staying at the Golden Lion again!
Rooms are smoky (even the non-smoking rooms) and the hotel is shabby. Service is terrible. Noise from Old Seward can be heard throughout the day and night.
Directions: Corner of 36th and New Seward Highway

Not the best in the west, but it will do...
I had a relatively nice room. The rate was $135.00 a night, which was pretty good for the time of year I went during the height of Cruise Season. I had highspeed internet (bring your own CAT 5 cable) and two HBOs. There was a nightclub where they had dance lessons on certain nights which made for great amusement while shooting pool and drinking beer.
Unique Quality: Why yes... there is a Golden Lion in the lobby. Total safari theme going on. There was a haircut / salon, workout facilities and a sauna.
