Value for money hotel
We stayed at this place in 2006. This is an affordable hotel that offer nice scenery and good services. It's just too bad they only have a jetty instead of a beach, hence we have to drive to the nearest Pantai Cenang to swim. The place is quiet and rather dark at night, rooms are ok, just a little out-dated but comfortable.
Unique Quality: Their food is great. For breakfast, they have wide varieties of local and western food and they taste so much better than other hotel's. Their buffet dinner were cheap and taste great. Definitely worth it to dine there, probably the best place to dine in Cenang area

No Beach Front
I stayed in Awana Porto Malai, during my last visit to Langkawi. The rooms were alright. The hotel does not have a beach front. It is quite a distance to town, so own transport needed. If you are thinking of just relaxing in the hotel, this hotel could be quite suitable for you. This hotel has a big swimming pool.
Unique Quality: The hotel has a nice view of the sea, expecially during sunset, it was beautiful. For the promotional price that I paid for this hotel, I'm sastisfied with the hotel.
You can check out my pictures of the hotel's sunset on my blog.

Escape to a World of Mediterranean Romance
Explore the beauty of the Resort's Mediterranean-inspired setting and embark on island-hopping adventure and soak in the sun, sea & surf on enchating white sands.
Ignite the flames of passion with a luxury sunset cruise, moonlight strolls on the Boardwalk & a romantic candlelight dinner under the stars.
Discover the fascinating cultures and legends of Langkawi with exotic local tours & end with a shopping spree at the many duty-free outlets.
Awana Porto Malai Resort is just the right place for all your indulgence.
Unique Quality: Awana Porto Malai Resort provides a host of leisure activities such as land activities & sea activities. Other notable facilities are duty-free shop, shuttle service to Kuah Town & Cenang Beach, Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa, etc.
This is a wonderful resort popular among the local & foreign tourists alike. Eventhough this resort is facing the sea with its own jetty, the only setback is that it doesn't have any beach. The swimming pool as an alternative is rather small & lonely. However, you still can have all the fun by going to the nearby Cenang beach or sign up yourself for an island-hopping tour (just nearby hotel, enquire at the concierge).
The continental buffet breakfast has a decent variety that will appeal to all tourists. You can either eat in or alfresco by the Boardwalk.
The hotel room is airy & spacious. You can choose to have sea view or garden view room. Upgrade your room to sea view at a small sum and you can enjoy the scenic sea view & azure sea breeze, room with comfy sofa & coffee table.
A stroll on the Boardwalk, be it in the early morning hours or moonlit night, is a romatic experience. Lying lazily on the deck chair, reading to your favourite novel, popping duty-free beer & munching some tidbits or a chat with friend. Beer is really cheap here, therefore you can stock up some in your hotel room's fridge.

Love the Food and Hate the Location
Awana Porto Malai is considered beautiful with the clear blue sea. It's located quite secluded and faraway from eateries and shopping spots, which I don't like. The main turn-off will be that Awana Porto Malai does not have a beach, only a jetty for fish feeding and occasional stop for Star Cruise. I'm sorry to say that the pool is a joke, being so small and just a few steps away from the open car park. The ground floor (other than the lobby) is a waste as there's only one souvenir shop which seemed to be closed and many other shoplots being vacant. Kind of spooky to walk there at night!
Room was okay as what we expected since most of the hotels in Langkawi are rather old. We have a small wooden door that opens overlooking the sea. However I don't like the idea of having a sinky in the room, which is really weird. Housekeeping is satisfactory.
Unique Quality: I love their food. Their buffet breakfast offers wide array of food. We even tried out their buffet dinner which was really good and value for money for around RM30 (in 2007) only!
Despite their shortcomings, I would say that the price and package that Awana Porto Malai offers will still attract me to stay there.

Directions: Follow the direction to Cenang beach from Langkawi Airport. You'll pass by Cenang area and its beach is on your right. Go straight all the way until the end and there it is, at the end of the road.

Cruise ships port of call
Porto Malai (Malay/Malaysia Port?) is a bit further than the other hotels from the town area (Kuah) on the main island but it is quiet and have lotsa privacy.
Its a bit faded than the pictures on their brochures and service is so so but if you're not particular about these 2 things then the privacy is worth it.
Unique Quality: The cruise ships stopping nearby. Its promoted as a honeymooners hotel.
Directions: Take the cab or rent a car when you arrive at the airport then go south a little bit.

Sea View Hotel
I always stay here during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition because of work related and I have to say that I wouldn't know how and what the hotel is like during normal days. The price is also abnormal during these times. It becomes outrages.
However, I must say that the hotel has such a good management because they can handle the guests, restaurants, rooms, facilities and activities at the same time when they are millions of people around. The room is as beautiful as any 5 star hotel but what I really like about it the view. They have a mini harbour, where all the yachts are there, including a pier for the Star Cruise. There's a view of the few islands and one of them is known as Pulau Bunting. They have a great outdoor restaurant where you dine on the platform deck while the waves splash and the lamb's roasting. The environment is really nice and it's closer to town. I like this place.
Unique Quality: Beautiful Views.

Malaysia's Mediterranean
It's a resort with a little bit of Mediterranean design located at the end of Tanjung Malai. It's about 25-30 minutes drive to Kuah Town. If you take a cab, it's about RM6 per head.
You can get a lot of privacy here, but, the place is not really as nice as what you saw in the websites. For people who enjoy noise and crowds...this is not the right place to be.
The building and rooms are still in a good condition, however there's only 2 cafe there...Seagull Restaurant...which sometimes the combination of buffet can be very messy....the only meal I enjoyed was its breakfast menu and Medi Cafe...where you can dine in while enjoying the lovely view from your table. Well, if you're looking for food or more shops...they're just 1-2 km away from Awana.
At night it's very quiet here, with not so much of things to do. There's a life band performing everynight at the resort's lobby...they're quite nice actually...very entertaining. If you're still not sleepy...you can dance the night away at Ground Zero...the resort's night hotspot.
Other activities you can do is swimming at it's pool which is open from morning till about 9pm. You can also take a boat and go for island hopping which will cost you about RM35 per head. They'll take you to the legendary 'Pregnant Maiden Island' where you can swim in the legendary lake and dip in your foot in hundreds of catfishes, then head over to Pulau Singa Besar where you can see many eagles from small to big ones, finally the boatman will take you to this small island ''Pulau Beras Basah''. The island is nice with a quite long stretch of white sandy beach.
Unique Quality: The greatest was to just seat at my room's balcony and enjoy the view... beautiful islands... blue water...boats coming and going or even docking.

Amazing view
Stayed here for four nights in January 2006. Personally, I do not care much for the rooms but I suppose it is alright considering the fact that the hotel is quite old and the rates are resonable.
However, the layout of the rooms is more of an inn than a hotel. Each room has seperate toilet and shower room (both are quite small) and in most rooms, the wash sink is in the bedroom itself, rather than in the bathroom.
Unique Quality: But what really impressed me is the amazing view you get form the hotel. You should ask for a Sea View room as it looks out to the sea and some really nice little islands. It is absolutely amazing to wake up and see the stunning sun rise.

Sunrise Hotel
This is my second time stay at this hotel. Staff is friendly. The hotel is clean, however, the housekeeping is a bit slacky compared to my 1st stay. Watch sunrise from your room and enjoy walks at the boardwalk. Plentiful of seabreeze. Very pleasant.
Unique Quality: Sunrise, sunrise and sunrise. Also you will see the fishing boats going off for the fishes.

At the tip of Langkawi
Awana Porto Malai is a 3 star hotel. I manage to get this offer through the official langkawi website, langkawi-online.com. RM930 for three nights for two standard rooms. Both room were on the second floor and were facing the hill and carparks. If you recieved a room with even number you will get one with hill view and if you get odd number you will get one with sea views. The hotel has no beach just a jetty. Both the room we got were inter-connected to one another through a door with the option of leaving them close as partition of course. Each room had a queen size bed, a colour tv with three channels of which one charges, one of the room has a balcony, sofa with table, fridge with nothing inside, kettle and sink and a attached bathroom with hot water, hair blower and two towels. Service was friendly and prompt to your needs. By the way the bed was really big, enough for three person. Breakfast was included for the three mornings and it was below average. There's an egg station though. You might want to buy enough mineral water for your stay there as i have some doubts over how clean the drinking water is. There is no safe. Overall i would recommend this place to anyone looking for an above average place to rest.
Unique Quality: The pool consist of a kids section with slides and stuff and also a lap pool which is only 1.35m deep. Lap pool is really small though so i dont think anyone can have enough swim there. So i would rate the pool 1/5 for me, great if i were a kid though. The sea view is really great, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the Star Cruise Ship docking. Most of the people staying in the hotel during our stay were mainly families. Not much shops nor restaurant available but there's an adventure counter which covers water sports and jungle or swamp trekking. If you are a football fan you would be disappointed as the hotel has no access to cable tv at all. There's a pool table in the lobby other than that the big car park available makes sure you dont worry about having no empty slots for your car.
Directions: Exit airport turn left and follow road all the way till junction make a right then quick left then follow road further down till end.

Best-Valued Hotel
I've stayed a few times at Awana Porto Malai. Though its abit secluded, I like the way its is quiet yet happening. For a few times I've take the Deluxe seaview room, the bed is comfortable, the roon is very clean, and of course, the view is simply superb. I love enjoying my sip of coffee at the balcony, where its windy and beautiful.
There is no beach here, but still I love the boardwalk along the hotel where you can view surrounding islands.
Unique Quality: Great Views.
The hotel itself gives me a feeling that its very bright and lively.

Romantic yet affordable
This is my 4th stay in this hotel , my wife still insist me to stay here for our next visit . This hotel gives us a cozy and friendly feeling. I strongly recommend to have your room facing sea view , the romantic view on the balcony complete your vacation with a glass of wine . At time you are lucky enough to see star cruises ship depot not far away ."Cons" , A little bit far in .
Unique Quality: Great view with a great experience.
Directions: It is the end of pantai cenang , ther is sign board along the way

The most affordable place with best view
The place is owned by Genting Group (a 3 star hotel). So there is a jetty for its Star Cruise and also a marina for private boat owners to dock in.
Unique Quality: The hotel is based on Mediterranean concept and just book the seaview room - the view is just superb. There is also place for you to play light games like pool, dart. And there's a live band performing at the lobby everynight.
Directions: Nearby Pantai Cenang

Balcony
Spend time out on the balcony of the hotel. You can watch the boats go by, watch the birds, see the sunrise, or read a book.
You also do self portraits like we did

Great views
Awana Langkawi Porto Malai
Situated on the south-western tip of Langkawi, the Mediterranean inspired designed Awana Porto Malai Langkawi is a charming holiday resort. Have your morning coffeel along its breezy boardwalk .
Unique Quality: This hotel sits at waters edge. There is no pool or there wasn't when we stayed there.
They do take you to a nearby island to swim and sun.
The views of nearby island are very pretty especially at sunrise.
You can sit on your balcony and watch the fishing boats come and go.
Every room has a small kitchenette with fridge, microwave, coffee pot, and utensils.
Nice size bedrooms with 2 wicker chairs that can be taken out on the balcony plus a couch.
