60 th VE-DAY - street decorations

triumphal arch

"Welkom Liberators"

In the text on this triumphal arch in Ugchelen (a suburb of Apeldoorn) you can see the strong bond between the Netherlands and Canada. Even this text is a mixture of 'Canadian' and 'Dutch'.

Off course it should be: "Welcome Liberators" or "Welkom Bevrijders"!!
Canadian flags above the Canadalaan

Canadian flags in Apeldoorn

I think there were thousands of Canadian flags, big and small, during the days of the 60th VE-DAY in Apeldoorn.

These picture is made in the "Canadalaan". This lane got his name after the war.
our home

Decorated houses

Just an example of one of the many many decorated houses in Apeldoorn.

This is our house and living in the "Canadalaan", we felt we have to decorate our home.

Again a mixture between Dutch (red, white, blue and orange) and Canadian (red and white with the maple leaf).
Koningstraat

Decorated streets

Many streets in Apeldoorn were decorated on the occasion of the 60th Liberation Day in the Netherlands.

Because there were many Canadian veterans this year in Apeldoorn, again a mixture of Canadian and Dutch elements.

This is the "Koningstraat" nearby the Palace Het Loo.
'maple leaf' lane

More decorations

A group of citizens living in this street, made this decorations all by themselves.

A special effect all these 'maple leave' flags together with the flowers in Apeldoorn along the Jachtlaan.
market garden in Apeldoorn

Market Garden

Four neighbours in Ugchelen created a new 'market garden' in their street, Hoenderloseweg.

Parachutes with paratroopers, bread, medicines, vehicles: were coming down and made it almost real.
In the evening the street was illuminated by candles.

They did win a local contest for the most beautiful VE-DAY decorations in Apeldoorn. And were choosen by a jury of Canadian veterans.
Raadhuisplein on Liberation Day

Also downtown

Not just decorations in the suburbs or residential areas. There were also a lot of Canadian flags and other decorations in downtown Apeldoorn.

These are side walk café's at the "Raadhuisplein", the most central square in our town. Again a mixture of Dutch - bikes - and Canadian - maple leaves - elements.

At this square CBC - Canadian Broadcast - had their outdoor studio and did comment the different ceremonies in the Netherlands.
no words

THANK YOU .....

... CANADIANS.

No more, no less !!!

Thank you for bringing back memories with your Apeldoorn Page. I was there a very long time ago - 33years! - The Kroller Muller Gallery was a special treat.

OK Dat gedonder met die bussen ook altijd. Amersfoort had ik al omgezet naar Veolia; Apeldoorn is nu ook omgezet. Bedankt! PJ

I love reading home town pages. You can learn so much about a city from the people who live there.
