Traveling by Train
You can travel from Kiev for a trip around Ukraine by modern comfortable trains where you can get a compartment seat for an average price of about $20.
A trip from Kiev to the Far East of Ukraine, to Luhansk, will take you about 16 hours in a sleeping car of a fast train (#20).
Now there are modern express trains (imitation of the German ICE...) to Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Such an express train covers the distance to Kharkiv in 5.5 hours.
