My Childhood days

I came to Silchar at the age of five and spent seventeen years here, the years of innocence, years of pranks, naughtiness, adventures, childish querrels, new discoveries, so to say the best years of anybody's life. Therefore I have very good memories of this small town. I am still not very nostalgic about it as my parents still live here and I make it there atleast once every year. So I have not yet got the chance to lose touch with the happenings there.

Things one should know about Silchar

1. In 1862, the first polo club in the world was formed by British tea planters at Silchar

2. The first competitive modern day polo match was also played in Silchar

3. The then picturesque and well-planned town (no-longer however!!!) was designed by Lieutenant Thomas Fischer, an officer with the British Empire in India in early 1800s.

4. This town is the headquarter of the Cachar district of Assam (unfortunately in VT, Silchar does not figure as a town in Assam)

5. It is located on the banks of the beautiful river Barak

6. The official language of Cachar district is Bengali. Way back in 1961 (much before the language movement in Bangladesh), 11 people including women and a 16 year old girl became Martyrs to achieve this feat

7. It is the gateway to the north easter Indian states of Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura

8. It is one of the biggest trade and educational centre in North Eastern India

9. The last capital of the Kachari Kings, Khaspur is only a few kilometers from Silchar

10. There are almost 100 big and small, but all very beautiful tea gardens around Silchar

11. The train route from Lumding (Assam) to Silchar through 33 tunnels is regarded as one of the most beautiful and picturesque train tracks in India and is an unforgettable experience for anyone who takes the trips via this route once.

12. The meter gauge trains are still running in and across Silchar.

13. Silchar railway station is the last rail station in north eastern India, and the train lines end here

14. One of Asia's largest paper mills, the Hindustan Paper Corporation is just a few kilometer away at Panchgram

Silchar is a very small town with not much things to see for tourists except for some picturesque tea gardens in the vicinity, some places of historical importance, and some very beautiful locations within the city. It is a city made up of small hillocks at some places, otherwise, basically a valley (called the Barak valley) on the bank of river Barak. The town is very green with lots of trees, especially betel nut, coconut, mango and banyan trees. Bamboo fences and bamboo houses are a common sight.

Silchar may be important to tourists from two different angles:

1. For those who visit the nearby hillstations at other north eastern Indian states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. They do have to pass through Silchar and may consider a stay here.
Outskirts (courtesy tcm.bsf.gov.in)
2. For those who want to do a bit of shopping of handicrafts and handlooms typical to the north eastern states.

In my Silchar travel page, I will try to list out the 'must visit' places in Silchar (although there are very less of them) and the 'must buys' for those who want to take souvenirs to their homes.

I searched across VT and was disappointed to see that there is no page on Silchar. I hope my page helps the future visitors to this small town.

Pros:"'Very warm people, good (but less known) places to see'"
Cons:"'Very densely populated, narrow roads, and almost no street lights'"
In A Nutshell:"'Come to Silchar and see a typical North Eastern Indian town'"

Excellent Silchar page! I think you are only one who built a page on Silchar or perhaps on Assam. Last year we met a couple at Apollo Madras who were from Silchar. Please add more tips especially on Lumding!
