Fes ,Morocoo

by travolta159 - last update: Aug 3, 2008

Welcome to my Fes page and Fes City

Welcome my dear friend to my Fez page. Fez is one of the most wonderful special amazing cities on Morocco. If you plan a trip to Morocco, alone or with your family ,Fez is one of the cities you should not miss.

But before you getting exacting let me give you a small good idea about fez .

Many of Moroccan’s rich crafts are made by Fez artisans. For hundreds of years such work has been regulated by traditional guilds, ensuring the highest quality. Each district has its own specialty:

It's hard to get your grip on Fez. This may be partly because there are three towns in Fez: the two ancient walled areas Fes-l-Bali (the old town) and Fes-l-Jdid (the new town) and the more modern French-built Ville Nouvelle.

But let this not scare you! Fez is one of the best sights in the world. The walled cities are the main attraction of Fez. The whole old city of Fez has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The immense medina of Fes-l-Bali is a huge labyrinth. In order not to get lost it is best to keep in mind that when you walk down you go towards the center, when you walk up, you leave the center.

The gates that are part of the walls are part of some amazing architecture. Within the walls you should at least try to find the Medersa Attarine, the Medersa Cherratine and Medersa Seffarine, three stunning old buildings near the center of the maze. The other thing you shouldn't miss is the people at work in the median: coppersmith, tanners, dyers. Spectacular colours and lousy working conditions make for great pictures.

Just outside the walls are two good museums Borj Nord (exhibiting weapons) and Dar Batha (Moroccan arts) and the Royal Palace.

please can you just take some of time and watch this video about FEZ

The labyrinth streets inside the city walls are a show that never ends and you never get lose. If you want help of any thing just ask there ‘re many of the things that make Fez so special plus the Mosques ,and Medersas in the medina, and it will be amazing seeing the artisans working at their workshops and the shops themselves.

In the picture you can see some souvenirs for sale in a shop in the old Medina of Fez.

The town of Fez has two differentiated sections: the Medina and la Ville The Medina is the name given to the old towns inside the ramparts In the North of Africa so inside the older Medina you will fin many thing if you want to eat or to pay things or shop or take pictures. The Medina of Fez is divided in two, the old town (Fes-l-BAli ) and the new town (Fes-l-Jdid) la Ville is great too , by the train station the taxi the bus the cafes the banks the post office , hostiles and to other many things like I said just ask.
The old town of Fez is the biggest and oldest medieval city in Africa and is love it by many people from all the world although some people said you need a map to the older Medina even it not necessary the map can take your time missing things loll.

The variety of things for sale in Fez' streets will surprise you and you will like it taking pictures with them even it will a pleasure for them, The Medina is huge, and each and every street is full of workshops and shops. They sell all kind of things like I said just ask if you want something you will got it Although there no different between tourist or local people all is the same and you will get the best stuff.

Sahat a nejarin.

Medina

The medina of Fez is reserved to pedestrians, but from time to time you will have to give way to the donkeys and horses. It is pretty amazing how the owners of these beasts find a way to pass through the overcrowded streets.
If you are walking in a narrow street, or staring at one of the shops, and hear someone shouting something in Arabic, just step aside. Most of the times it will be someone riding a horse or a donkey. And you do not want to be stepped by a horse, do you? hhhhhhhhhh but don't worry there it will be no trouble. they can understand us.

Friends

So let us not miss in Fez the mosques and medersas. Some of the most famous are Mosques the Qaraouiyyine the Attarin Medersa, great sample of local architecture with nice views from its roof; and last, but definitely no least, the Medersa Bou Inania, next to Bab Boujeloud Gate. And the mosque in la ville TAjmouaati.

Souvenir

if you want to get Souvenir or something you will found a many different of many things.

Fes Tannery

Working the skin people in the older medina of fes tanneries.

The dyes used in the tanneries are made of natural materials. To make the hides nice and supple a pungent mixture of pigeon poop, acids and cow urine is used.
Here is the famous fes tannery and there will be tons of leather stores in the area of the older medina They sell everything you can imagine. From slippers to purses, chairs to jackets. I purchased a pair of yellow, pointy slippers that were very popular with the locals.
Tannery many people work there.

Mosque

The Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin, near the Suq al-'Attarin, u sed to work into this place Al- attarin for tow year they sell every thing of electronic and clothes skin things….. or Spice Market of Fez al-Bali, is one of the world's oldest universities, and the largest mosque in Africa.

Founded as a private oratory in 857 by Fatima, the daughter of a wealthy Qayrawani immigrant, in the tenth century the mosque became the congregational mosque of the quarter of al-Qarawiyyin. The mosque is surrounded by madrasas, and was a major intellectual center in the medieval Mediterranean. Its prestigious academic reputation may have transcended religious divisions, if, as a popular tradition suggests, Gerbert of Auvergne (930-1003), who would become Pope Sylvester II and who is credited with introducing the use of zero and Arabic numerals to Europe, was once a student at al-Qarawiyyin.
Fez was intimately linked to Islamic Spain politically, economically, and culturally - particularly after 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabel's expulsion of Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula brought an influx of refugees into the city. Visual references to the religious and palatine architecture of Islamic Spain are evident in the mosque's hypostyle plan, the 10th century square stone minaret (commissioned and funded by 'Abd al-Rahman III, the first Umayyad caliph of al-Andalus), and by the carved stucco, wood, and glazed tile (zilij) ornamental style derived from the Alhambra. However, al-Qarawiyyin's T-shaped plan, created by an elevated central aisle perpendicular to an aisle fronting the qibla wall, belongs to North African mosque tradition. Stuccoed brick, with stone and tile revetment, and carved cedar wood are the primary materials used for the structure and ornament of the mosque proper.
The Almoravid ruler, Sultan 'Ali ben Yusuf expanded the mosque to its present size between 1134 and 1143. The courtyard's blue and white tile floor, marble ablutions fountain, and the two fountain pavilions, which recall the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra, were added by the Sa'did Sultan 'Abdallah ibn al-Shaikh (r. 1606-23).
