Where I Grew Up

My Hometown

Rubizhne, Luhansk region, Ukraine...
This is the city where I grew up, finished a secondary school and made first friends...
I graduated from secondary school #3 in 1977 and afterwards visited this city very often to see my parents and friends.
My parents live here downtown in Mendeleyev Street.

The first settlement at the city area dates back to 1730 when Cossack Colonel Rushkevich founded a Cossack fort called Rubezh (in English Border).
The Cossack village got new development when it was connected with major cities by the railroad that was built in 1894-1895.
The settlement grew when a chemical factory called Russko-Kraska was built in the area in 1915.
1915
has been celebrated as the foundation year of the town of Rubizhne.
The factory settlement of Rubizhne got municipal rights in 1934.
The city has the territory of 3,376 hectares. The population is about 65 thousand inhabitants now.
The biggest holiday of the year has always been Chemical Worker’s Day that is celebrated on the last Sunday of May with a large cultural and sports program and a fireworks display in the evening.
You can read about international relations of this city at
Rubizhne/Louisville, Kentucky

And some more information from the web site of the Regional Library and another information portal.
The city portal was launched on June 1, 2006.

Mendeleyev Street

This is Mendeleyev Street - one of the central streets of the city that has a population of about 65 thousand inhabitants now.
Bohdan Khmelnitsky Street runs parallel to Mendeleyev Street forming the city center.
These streets are intersected by three other central streets:
Kirov Street, Liberators' Street and Lenin Street.
You can find everything you need in each of those streets: cafes and restaurants, shops and stores, photo studios and Internet clubs.
There are 110 streets and lanes in the city.
I grew up in a five-storey apartment building in Mendeleyev Street not far from its intersection with Lenin Street and graduated from School 3 in Students' Street.
Rubizhne is one of the few towns of Luhansk region that has its own amateur musical comedy theater that works at the city conference center. They staged My Fair Lady and other operas.

City of Chemical Workers

Since there is a lot of chemical industry here, Dmitry Mendeleyev (1834-1907), the Father of the Russian Chemical science, who created the Periodical System of Chemical Elements, is very much revered here.
You can see this monument to the Great Chemist in Mendeleyev Street not far from the bus terminal opposite School 8.
There were rumors in the seventies that the city would be merged with the neighboring cities: Lissichansk and Syeverodonetsk and the new huge city would be renamed into Mendeleyevsk in honor of this man. But those plans were not destined to come true, thank God!

I see that, as at our place, the war to left of the tracks. Even here it must never been forget, but I prefer to turn myself towards the future. I liked the mosaic of peace and the new cathedral. Beautiful photos!
