I was privileged to visit this old legendary city during my first trip to Germany as a student in September 1981. I was a member of a group of Soviet students who came to Magdeburg pedagogical institute in August for a month-long language course. The picture shows the main city sites: from left to right:
The city conference center, Burggarten (Castle Garden), Pfefferteich (Pepper Pond), second row from left to right: Modern downtown street, Burgstrasse, Strasse der Jugend. |

| | Jenny Marx City Since it was in Soviet times, we were not taken to the city's famous churches and cathedrals, but to "Marx Family Museum" located in the house where Jenny Westphalen, Karl Marx' wife, was born. Also, we listened to a lecture on communism and its present success and development trends. We got some brainwashing too, as usual. The lecturer drew our attention to the fact that the town of Salzwedel located six kilometers from the state border "bordered on imperialism" and we all had to be vigilant all our everyday life... The city also boasts of the medieval streets that remained preserved for centuries and did not suffer any destruction during wars. Thank God!
