  • Favorite Thing: Do you know that the red snowball tree is one of the symbols of the country?
There are lots of songs and poems glorifying that tree whose berries were long used as a universal means of treatment of many deseases.

Do you know that the sunflower is another plant known to be one of the symbols of Ukraine?
The country has always been famous for its huge sunflower oil production.

  • Favorite Thing: First of all I would take you to Khreshchatyk, the Ukrainian capital's central street and from there to the Dnipro embankment located on the hills.
There is a beautiful view of the city from there.

Fondest Memory: Visiting Crimea and walking in the Crimean Mountains and in the cities on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula.

  • Favorite Thing: I have found some nice words about the Ukrainians.
This is what a Canadian historian James F.Coughlin wrote about Ukrainians:

As colonizers in different parts of the world, the Ukrainians are showing their desirable qualities. They readily take to their new lands, ever improving and extending, and try to maintain a peaceful attitude and a high standard with all other nationalities. They possess strong and robust physiques, which adapt them to any geographical location. They are also gifted with large families and a patriotic fervor, which ensure the perpetuation of their race, ideals and culture.

  • Favorite Thing: Lots of poems and songs, folk dances performed at the stage...

Fondest Memory: I liked and still remember this wonderful poem written by our fellow countryman Volodymyr Sosyura who was born in Luhansk region.
    You might like it, too:

    *** LOVE UKRAINE ***
    by Volodymyr Sosyura

    Love Ukraine, love it like the sun;
Like the wind, and grass and water?
In the hour of happiness and in time of joy,
Love it in the hour of misfortune.

    Love Ukraine in your dream
    And when you are awake,
    Your cherry-like Ukraine.
Its beauty, eternally live and new,
And its tongue like that of the nightingale.

    Among the brotherly peoples,
    Like a flourishing orchard
    She is shining for centuries.
Love Ukraine with all your hearts
    And with all your deeds.

For us she is unique in the world,
Only one in the sweet charm of spaces?
She is in the stars, in the birch
    And in every pulse of the heart;

She is in the flower and bird,
    In the electric fires,
In every song, in every thought,
In the child?s smile, in the girls? eyes,
And in the reddish fluttering of banners?

As the fire burns but never burns out,
She lives in the paths and meadows,
    In the whistling of sirens,
And the waves of the Dnieper,
And in the fiery red clouds.

    In the fire of cannonades
    That crushed to death
The invading foreigners in green uniforms,
In the bayonets that in the darkness
    pierced our way
To the springs, glorious and sincere.

Young man! Give her your smile,
Your tears and all you have?
    You cannot love other people
If you do not love Ukraine.

Young girl! Like its blue sky
    Love her every minute.
Your boy-friend will not love you
If you do not love Ukraine.

Love her in work, in love and in battle,
Like a song that sails with the star?
With all your heart love your Ukraine,
And we will be eternal along with her.

As you may have guessed, I love the historic Ukranian house w/ hand painted facade. New construction...not so much. Good idea to list holidays...handy when planning a trip. The sunflowers are glorious!

It is interesting reading your Ukraine pages. We have a lot of Ukrainians in Winnipeg. I have never considered visiting the Ukraine though. Maybe I should reconsider.

Great page, Victor! Long live Ukrainian-Russian friendship! Let these unpleasant times go away (I'm afraid not early than your today's authorities go away)!
