Getting TO/AROUND: Here is the map of distances between the cities in Iraq. I often traveled from Samawa to the capital (271 km) and to the International Airport.

Getting TO/AROUND: By plane: "Iraqi Airways" flew then, I don't know if it operates now.
Baghdad has a spacious international airport.

    Transportation: Southern Iraq
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Car/Motor Home
Getting TO/AROUND: This is the map of southern Iraq with the city of Samawa where I worked for a year as an interpreter at a cement plant built by the Soviet Union in the seventies.
You can also see the place of Ur and Lake Sawa where we used to bathe every week and sometimes even went fishing.

    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are plentiful. Major towns have excellent bus services. A network of well-paved roads connects Baghdad with all parts of the country. Regular flights were scheduled between Baghdad, Basrah and Mosul. If there are any now, please contact Iraqi Airways Offices and any other travel agencies.
A network of railway lines also connects (or used to connect when I was there) Baghdad with many towns as well as cities abroad, as follows:
    1. Baghdad — Basrah (Margil) — Um Qasr Line, 582 km
It goes through Babylon (Hilla), Kadisiya (Samawa, thence to Warka).
    2. Thi Qar (Nasiriya, then to Ur), the Marshes with their unique scenic beauty, and Basrah. There are two Baghdad-Basrah and Basrah-Baghdad trains daily, a morning one and an evening one.
    3. Baghdad — Baquba—Kirkuk -Arbil Line, 461 kms., including its branches to Jelawla and Khanaqin.
    4. Baghdad—Samarra—Tikrit—Shergat, (Ashur) - Hammam al-Alil (mineral baths) - Mosul Line. There are/were two Baghdad — Mosul and Mosul — Baghdad trains daily, a morning one and an evening one.
    5. Baghdad Mosul —Tell Kochek —Ya'rubiya Line, 528 kms. At the Iraqi border it joins the Syrian and Turkish railways. This Orient Express makes two trips a week from Baghdad to Istanbul and from Istanbul to Baghdad.

    Transportation: By Bus Around Baghdad

    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Buses seem to be the most reliable transportation in the capital, although all the inscriptions on them were in Arabic.
You only have to know "your bus" route number and then take it once to remember the stops.

Outstanding business-trip (komandirovka, haha!). Pity that it wouldn't be probable repeated once more again in near future, though Baghdad and Iraq are so interesting as tourist sights... Thanks Victor for your excellent page!
