| @ 122nd km motel PragueßBrno motorway, CZ |
| | On Our Way Home The Czech Republic is one of the countries I didn’t plan to visit. We, a group of four engineers from a factory in Luhansk, a driver and me as an interpreter, traveled to Germany on business by “Ford-Transit” minibus through Poland. We decided to cross the Czech Republic and Slovakia on our way back, which was a good opportunity to see the world. We stayed for a night at "122nd km" motel (on the picture) on the highway Prague-Brno. I enjoyed my stay there: a nice restaurant, affordable prices and the long-awaited Czech beer!

Taste Beer and Wine I have read about this country before and I had a wonderful opportunity to see something with my own eyes. So we crossed the German-Czech border at Oberwiesental, the highest town in East Germany, and headed towards Prague, the Czech capital. We had to drive past Karlsbad that was on the left side of the splendid highway and hurry to Prague. Beside excellent roads many things in this country are excellent and interesting. First of all, beer, the famous Czech beer! Among the many different sorts of beer “Velkopopovichsky Kozel” is perhaps the most known dark beer containing 4.0 per cent alcohol. You can also taste fresh Czech wine in numerous wine shops called “sklepik” in Czech to the live music of local orchestras and groups performing traditional lively soldier songs. As a matter of fact, Czech Republic is a land of many big battles such as Austerlitz, which is now the city of Slavkov that we also passed on our way. It’s 15 km to the east of Brno. Austerlitz Battle was the first encounter of Russian troops with the Napoleon’s army in 1805. Now there is a Peace Memorial there.

Czech Cuisine and Souvenirs The Czech people are known for their love of old and ancient things. Wherever you travel in this country, you will see lots of clean and tidy streets and squares in the towns and cities that are different in size and layout with a lot of medieval buildings, old city hall towers, cathedrals, fountains, cafes and restaurants located in old buildings. I couldn’t help admiring the sense of humor the Czech people have. They bake lots of cakes and biscuits in the form of little coffins (“rackichki”), skulls (“cherep”), little dragons and other things reminding you of the next world. Of all countries I have visited I found such things only in Czech cities. Czech Republic is perhaps the only country in the world where absinth (wormwood) vodka (70%) is officially distilled and not forbidden as in many other countries. It was forbidden for its hallucination effect that is a health hazard if you consume the absinth vodka often and in large glasses for its poison accumulates in your organism. This sort of vodka is drunk diluted and with ice. Still, the Russian one is more dear and habitual for us. So if you happen to travel to this country, don’t forget to taste absinth vodka :-) Dining at Czech restaurants you can order the famous “knedlik” – sausage-like pastry baked in a special way and with a lot of spicy sauce. The cafes and restaurants are very special, too. You can get more information about them at the Czech site: www.gurman.cz
This web site includes 100 best Czech restaurants and cafes found in every city. As for the souvenirs, you can always buy and take home with you Bohemian glass, cut glass, carved wood products, semiprecious Bohemian stones, china products, handmade embroidered clothes and ceramics (handmade in Kolovec and Straznice- the two famous ceramics centers).
I would like to visit this country again, to spend more time there and to see more of its cities.
