You don't mention your budget, but whenever I need to stay in the city, I look at either needitnow.com.au, or wotif.com.
It's really a last-minute type website, but you can book up to 4 weeks in advance. If I were a tourist in Sydney, I personally would choose to stay in The Rocks Area. The Old Sydney Holiday Inn looks nice.

I can recommend SYDNEY HARBOUR B&B which is located in Cumberland Street The Rocks. I stayed there for 4 nights prior to my Cruise in May this year. Checkout their website!.

Check out lastminute.com, they have good 5 star hotels in good locations at good prices. As a Sydney sider I don't often stay in town and when I do it is with work. The Rocks area is a good suggestion but as with any Capitol City hotels are a dime a dozen.

Yes, please give a budget. Although the already mentioned B&B is not overly expensive and is in a great area I would not consider it a budget rate...

If you are fine with booking only a few weeks in advance try www.wotif.com
You can really get great deals. We once stayed at the Unilodge (near university, railway station) for clearly under $ 100.
