I would prefer ones that cover bachs and apartments and have live availability.

I used the Budget Motel Chain http://budgetmotelchain.com.au/

I reserved all of my hotels/motels in advance using this site. Except for the one hotel in Auckland all were satisfactory or very satisfactory.

Unique Qualities: They have a wide variety of budget places to choose from.
You are free to write to each one and ask any questions.

You can, but do not have to, reserve through them.
It is worth writing to each your choices, because sometimes they will give cheaper rates than the Budget Motel Chain site itself.

They also offer a free 'Accommodation Directory' on the site. Well worth having.
